Split Excel Sheets Into Individual Files

Large workbooks with many sheets can be difficult to share and manage — not everyone needs access to every tab. This tool extracts each sheet from a workbook into its own standalone .xlsx file. When the workbook contains multiple sheets they are bundled into a convenient ZIP archive for easy downloading. If the workbook contains only one sheet the individual file is downloaded directly without zipping.

How Splitting Works

• One sheet per file — Every sheet in the source workbook becomes an independent Excel file named after the sheet. For example a workbook with "January", "February", and "March" sheets produces three separate files named January.xlsx, February.xlsx, and March.xlsx.
• Safe filenames — Characters that are not valid in filenames are replaced with underscores to ensure cross-platform compatibility. Sheet names are also checked against Excel's 31-character sheet name limit and adjusted if needed while preserving as much of the original name as possible.
• ZIP bundle for multiple files — When two or more files are produced they are packaged into a ZIP archive for convenient single-download delivery. Extract the ZIP on your computer to access each individual workbook ready for use.

Practical Use Cases

Use this tool when you need to distribute individual sheets to different team members, extract a single sheet for sharing without revealing data from other tabs, organize a large dataset by splitting it into smaller thematic workbooks, or prepare separate files for import into different systems that only accept single-sheet workbooks. Each output file is a proper .xlsx workbook that can be opened and edited in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, or any other spreadsheet application without compatibility issues.
