Inspect Excel Workbook Contents Before Processing

Before converting, merging, or splitting a workbook it is often useful to understand its structure. This tool gives you a clear text summary of the entire workbook so you can make informed decisions about which tool to use next. The summary includes the total number of sheets, the row and column counts for each sheet, and a configurable preview of the data itself.

What You Will See

• Sheet inventory — A complete list of every sheet name in the workbook along with the row count and column count for each sheet. This tells you at a glance whether the workbook is organized the way you expect and whether any sheets are empty or unexpectedly large.
• Data preview — The first rows of each sheet are displayed side by side so you can verify that headers are correct, data types are consistent, and there are no unexpected blank rows or columns. The preview row count is adjustable from 0 to 100 through the options panel.
• Truncated cell display — Individual cell values are capped at 30 characters in the preview display to keep the output readable and avoid overwhelming the screen. The actual cell data in the workbook is not affected — this is purely a display behavior for the preview.

Why Preview First

Checking a workbook's structure before processing can save time and prevent errors. You might discover that column names differ from what you expected, that some sheets are empty, or that the data is formatted differently than anticipated. This is especially valuable when working with unfamiliar files from external sources, automated system exports, or legacy documents created years ago. Use the adjustable preview count to see more or fewer rows depending on your needs — set it to 0 to see only the sheet inventory without any data preview.
